AHMADABAD, April 20: One person was killed and 14 injured when police opened fire to stop a new outbreak of rioting on Saturday between Hindus and Muslims in western India.

The riot in the town of Kapadvanj was the latest in a long string of incidents of sectarian violence in western Gujarat state.

In Kapadvanj, 40 kilometres north of Ahmadabad, police fired into a crowd of rioters on Saturday after more than 20 shops and houses belonging to both Hindus and Muslims were looted and set on fire.

Authorities have imposed on indefinite curfew on the town, said district superintendent of police. The violence broke four days of peace in Gujarat.

Witnesses said it started after Muslims in the town objected to a wall constructed by a group of Hindus in a Muslim neighbourhood. One Muslim was killed when police fired to scatter the crowd, Aggarwal said. Another 14 people - 11 Muslims and three Hindus - were injured, the police official said.—APP
