Referendum — a déjà vu


AMONGST all the dictators, military as well as civilian, it has been our misfortune to suffer, the most sensible, urbane, forward looking and benign of the lot has been Musharraf. Consequently one expected him to learn from history and not go down the beaten track followed by his predecessors in search for dubious legitimacy, that is a queer mixture of delusive populism and religious exhibitionism.

But to see the ‘no nonsense’ commando in battle fatigues praying at Data Gunj Bakhsh Mazar and delivering a monologue before a press ganged crowd at Minar-i-Pakistan, Lahore, flanked by the usual opportunist supporters, had a touch of deja vu about it. Having taken this path, one only hopes that his end will not be the same as those of the others of his ilk as it would truly be a loss of a good man bestowed upon us by Providence after a long time.
