KARACHI: PPP bars its Nazims from referendum

KARACHI, April 14: After the decision by the Jammat-i-Islami backed Al-Khidmat group to remain neutral during the process of referendum, the PPP also announced, on Sunday, to bar the Nazims, Naib Nazims and councilors that it supports from the referendum.

The PPP has restricted its Nazims to only receiving General Pervez Musharraf on his arrival to address public meetings in their respective districts and see him off on his departure.

A decision to this effect was announced by the party’s acting general secretary, Raza Rabbani, during a press conference.

Raza Rabbani said that strict disciplinary action would be taken against Nazims found violating the party decision.

“We have decided to keep our elected general councilors, Naib Nazims and Nazims out of the whole exercise of referendum. They would neither attend meetings and rallies, nor take part in arrangements of public meetings of the President,” he said.

Claiming that the government had refused to allow the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy to hold its meeting at Minar-e-Pakistan on the 27th, he expressed the determination that the meeting against the referendum would be held at all costs.—PPI
