Montgomery outshines S. African sprint hope

CENTURION, April 13: US sprinter Tim Montgomery outclassed new South African hope Morne Nagel with an impressive 9.94 seconds time in the 100 metres in an international meeting here Friday.

Nagel has had an outstanding indoor season and is aiming to become the first white athlete to run under 10 seconds for the 100 metres.

But he was soundly beaten by both world silver medallist Montgomery and another US sprinter, Shawn Crawford, who also broke 10 seconds, while Nagel clocked 10.13 seconds in a race run at an altitude of 1,800 metres.

Montgomery, who has predicted he will run a new world record of 9.75 seconds this season as he bids to oust world champion Maurice Greene, was ecstatic with his time.

“It’s a great start to the season for me,” said Montgomery. “I thank the crowd, which inspired us. This has been great.”

The altitude also assisted times in the 200 metres, with Crawford winning in a scorching 19.85 seconds.

And South African athlete Marcus la Grange posted a world-class 44.65 seconds to win the 400 metres.

In the 110 metres hurdles, Stanislavs Olijars of Latvia beat former Olympic champion Allen Johnson in 13.15 seconds.

South African Chris Harmse set a new Commonwealth hammer record of 80.19 metres in another outstanding performance.
