A fashion show with a difference

Bureau Report

PESHAWAR, April 11: A fashion show organised by Gandhara Welfare Society in connection with the NWFP centenary celebrations proved a blessing for the medical students and other participants who gave standing ovation to the performers.

The medical wing of Gandhara Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) was behind the gala arrangements that included folk music, traditional food and male fashion show. The last item remained pick of the proceedings for it engaged the otherwise rowdy students as long as it progressed.

The show was arranged at Ladies Club, University Town, on Wednesday night where besides PIM’s students, journalists and people of other walks of life took part and enjoyed the night. The local male models hogged the maximum limelight, who performed catwalk in a very professional manner. When they emerged on the stage, the lawn burst into clapping. Credit must go to coordinator, Ali Malik, who, while briskly giving directions to his models, let the proceedings go uninterrupted.

The provincial metropolis has witnessed many fashion shows in the past, but this was a departure from the past tradition where the models from Lahore and Karachi were invited to perform here, because all the nine models were locally trained. They all happened to be college students.

It also proved a marked transition from the west to the east, more so because the culture of fashion shows originated from the west and the local models, depicted a true Pakhtun culture through their locally-tailored cheap dresses. Naeem Khan, a local choreographer, who took care of playback music, has literally burnt the midnight oil to make the show a complete success. The installation of smoke-emitting machine coupled with best lighting system made the event a memorable one.

To organise catwalks on this droopy musical track is no small feat, given the ever-growing influence of clergy in this part of the world. Logistics support was provided by Imperial Collections and Onyx. The organisers also took care of the dress ethics for the male models considering the presence of girl students which turned the show into a sober one.

This was for the first time in Peshawar that models wore local dress, Shalwar-Qamee
