By Our Correspondent

MANSEHRA, April 11: The district Nazim of Mansehra, Mohammad Azam Khan Swati, on Tuesday directed the Tehsil Municipal Administration Mansehra authorities to take concrete steps for providing civic amenities to the residents of Mansehra town and to remove encroachments and disconnect illegal water connections given to people in the town.

Speaking at a joint session of the Tehsil Assembly Mansehra and the elected representatives of the three union councils at the district council hall here he asked the elected representative to make sure their participation in the public rally of the president Gen Pervez Musharraf to be held in Abbottabad on April 15 to gear up campaign for referendum.

He said any attempt to make the system of district government a failure will be dealt with an iron hand and the officials showing negligence in performance of their duties would be taken to task. The session deliberated at length the issues pertaining to the civic problems being faced by the dweller of the town. The Nazimeen and Naib Nazimeen and some councilors of the three UCs of the town lambasted the tehsil municipal officer (TMO) and the sanitation branch of the TMA and accused them of multiplying the problems of the people.

They drew the attention of the district Nazim towards the insufficient strength of the sanitation staff and ugly scenes of filth and garbage in every nook and corner of the town. The representatives of the sanitation staff union presented a long list of charges against the former sanitary inspector of the TMA and charged him of embezzling the daily wages of the sanitation staff workers.

Responding to the points raised by the participants, the district Nazim Mohammad Azam Khan Swati assured them to provide all civic facilities to the people through the coordinated efforts of the elected representatives and the TMA officials.

He ordered a probe into the embezzlement of the daily wages of the sanitation workers and announced additional Rs300 per month for each daily wager of the sanitation staff from his own pocket.

He directed the TMA authorities for restructuring the water supply system in the town by saying that an inquiry would be initiated for ascertaining the factual position about illegal water connections and the encroachments in the town.

Mohammad Azam Khan Swati informed that for permanent solution of the problem of the potable water in Mansehra town, the construction of the long awaited Azheera water supply scheme in the eastern hills of Hazara has been approved which will be soon taken in hand.<
