KARACHI, April 3: The city government will not take back the case, registered under Section 302 (CrPC), against the bus driver involved in the Karimabad traffic accident, in which two college girls and a motorcyclist were killed. The issue will be settled by the court only.
This was announced by City Nazim Naimatullah Khan at a joint press conference with representatives of a number of transport organizations in his office on Wednesday.
It was also announced that the transporters would help curb the speeding problem by abolishing the so-called ‘token system’ within two days. Besides, no transport organization would give strike call unilaterally.
Those present on the occasion included chairman of the transports committee, Hafiz Ahmed Ali; EDO (transport) Tahir Soomro; DIG traffic, Saud Mirza; and Naib Nazim Tariq Hassan.
The Nazim said major differences with the transporters had been resolved and no compromise had been made on the interests of the common man, adds PPI.
Earlier, the Nazim held a meeting with representatives of a number of transport unions, which was attended by City Naib Nazim; chairman transports committee Hafiz Ahmed Ali; UC Nazim Muslim Pervez, besides officials of the transport and communication department and traffic police.
The Nazim said DIG traffic had assured him that the police would slap section 279 only in case of an accident and not for subjugating a driver.
He said the code of ethics for drivers would be formulated by the transporters and the city government, while the transporters agreed to remove tape-recorders from buses, minibuses and wagons.
The meeting also decided not to allow males to travel in the ladies compartments in pubic buses and violation of the rule would be checked by the town police officers and traffic police.
A number of transporters said that they would observe a month of decency in April and discourage drivers having improper driving records.
The transport and communication department would entertain the transporters’ demand to make bus lanes on all major roads similar to that on Sharea Faisal.
