KARACHI, March 28: Reckless driving claimed two more lives in the city on Thursday.
An unidentified man was killed by a bus on Sharea Faisal. Police said the victim, who was in his early 50s, was run over by a speeding bus of route 9-C while walking across Sharea Faisal near the FTC traffic intersection. He was rushed to JPMC where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police claimed to have arrested the bus driver, Nasir Ali Khan, and impounded the bus.
A young man died in a road accident at Guru Mandir. Police said a motorcyclist, Arif Husain, aged 26, was knocked down by a speeding bus of route 55-A (JO-2284) at the main Guru Mandir traffic intersection.
Police claimed to have arrested the bus driver, Abdul Jaleel, and impounded the vehicle.
BEATEN UP: The Orangi Extension police took into custody the conductor of a University point bus (KA-6713) after a private car of the SHO Orangi Extension collided with the bus in Sharifabad in the morning.
The bus was on its way to Karachi University from Banaras Chowk while the SHO’s car was being followed by a police mobile, students said.
Before taking the conductor into custody, police beat up the driver and the conductor of the bus. Students travelling in the point bus intervened and managed to set free the driver from the police mobile.
Students said later, in the afternoon, the SHO sent his car (RNL-5350) to Karachi University with a constable, demanding immediate repair of the car in exchange for release of the bus conductor.
Students and the employees union of the university detained the vehicle and the constable on the campus and demanded of the SHO that he come to the campus and apologize to the driver. When contacted the SHO, Pervaiz Akhtar, disowned the car, saying he hired the car in which he was travelling. He also denied having detained the conductor of the bus and beating up the driver and the conductor of the point bus by police.
