Seven gangs of dacoits busted

SIALKOT, March 27: The district police have arrested seven gangs of dacoits operating inter-district and recovered booty worth over Rs1.5 million and illegal weapons during special raids.

This was disclosed by Sialkot SSP Muhammad Tahir while talking to newsmen here on Wednesday.

During a special campaign, he said the police had arrested 629 proclaimed offenders, 388 court absconders and 213 pushers with 1.232kg of heroin, 1kg of opium, 25kg of charas and 360 bottles of wine.

The police, in another campaign, seized eight kalashnikoves, 26 guns, 38 rifles, 56 revolvers, 150 pistols, 39 daggers, eight carbines, five hand-grenades and 1,862 bullets, he said.

Mr Tahir claimed the police had traced out 19 cases of burglary, 28 each of murder and robbery, 37 of murder attempt, 10 of kidnapping, six of rape and 12 cases of dacoities besides recovering looted goods worth Rs1.5 million.

REVIEWED: The District Development Committee reviewed the pace of construction work on various roads in the district under the City Development Package.

District Naib Nazim Ali Asjad Malhi presided over the meeting held here on Wednesday.

Expressing satisfaction over the work, Executive District Officer (finance and planning) Dr Arshad Mahmood said three main roads, the Kashmir Road, Defence Road and the Shahabpura Road, had been constructed at a cost of Rs330 million while work on the Khadim Ali Road and Circular Road was in progress.

District Coordination Officer (DCO) Capt Zahid Saeed (retired), Sialkot Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) President Daud Ahmad Chattha and other officials were present on the occasion.

PROJECTS: Around 249 development projects will soon be completed in the district with an expenditure of Rs310 million.

This was stated by DCO Cap Zahid Saeed (retired) at a special meeting of the District Development Committee chaired by district Nazim Mian Naeem Javed here on Wednesday.
