Referendum opposed

HARIPUR, March 26: Azmat-i-Islam Movement (AIM) Presi-dent Zaheer-ul-Islam Abbasi has said that since the three services’ chiefs have already been inducted into the National Security Council, there is no need to give the military any other role in the governance of the country.

He said this, while talking to newsmen in a “Roobroo” programme here at the press club.

Abbasi, who belongs to Haripur, was recently released after remaining incarcerated for an abortive military coup against top military brass and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in September 1995.

When asked to comment on President Musharraf’s intention to hold referendum to stay in power, he said it (holding referendum) was an “extra-constitutional and unethical” step. He said if Musharraf wanted to ensure that his reforms were not reversed, he must quit power and get himself elected as president.
