KARACHI, March 26: Various parts of the city will either go dry or receive scant supply of water on Wednesday owing to short supply of over 40 mgd from Dhabeji’s phase-II pumping station.

Pumping of water to the city remained suspended for 12 hours on Monday following a fault which developed in the Feeder No 1.

Another power failure of one hour, which took place at the North-East Karachi’s old pumping station on Sunday following tripping of its Extra High Tension wire, caused a shortfall of 2.5 mgd.

According to KWSB sources, pumping of water to the city from four, out of five pumps of Dhabeji (Phase-II), had remained suspended for about 12 hours as there was no electricity at the pumping station from 6.30 pm on Monday to 6am on Tuesday.

It was the second time during the week that the same feeder developed fault. The feeder had developed a major fault on Tuesday last and as a result of which various parts of the city faced a serious water crisis.

KWSB sources said that power supply to the Dhabeji’s (phase- II) went off at 6.30 pm on Tuesday and it was restored at 6pm on Tuesday.

Asked about the impact of short supply of water in the city, KWSB officials said it will create an acute water shortage in most of the city areas and the city’s overall supply position is expected to be normalized by Thursday.

DEMO: Hundreds of residents of Orangi’s Sector 11-1/2 on Tuesday blocked the main road to voice their anger over the non- supply of water to their localities for the last fortnight.

The protesters, including women, assembled at Orangi’s Nishan-i-Haider Chowk, near Aziz Nagar, raised anti-KWSB slogans for depriving their localities of water for the last 15 days.

Some of the demonstrators also burnt tyres on the road and pelted vehicular traffic with stones.

CLOSURE: Various parts of the city’s former districts Central and West would remain dry from Thursday to Saturday morning in the wake of a 46-hour closure being applied by the KWSB to install a valve in 48-inch dia pipeline, near North Karachi’s Sector 5-C roundabout.

The localities which would go without water during the closure period include Buffer Zone’s sectors 15-A-1, 15-A-2, 15-A-3, 15-A-4, 15-A-5, 15-B; North Karachi’s Sir Syed Town and its adjacent localities, KDA Scheme-33, North Karachi, New Karachi, New Rasheedabad, Mianwali Colony, Shadman Town, Ayub Goth, Pirabad, Qasba and their adjoining localities.
