Powell goal sinks Tottenham

LONDON, March 19: England defender Chris Powell heaped more misery on Tottenham Hotspur with a scrappy goal in Charlton Athletic’s 1-0 victory in the English Premier League Monday.

Powell, the left back, made a rare foray into the penalty area on 70 minutes to scramble home the winner after a mistake by Spurs’ England hopeful, Ledley King.

It was his first Premier League goal for Charlton and only the second premier league strike of his career.

Powell’s contribution — added to a fine performance by Charlton keeper Dean Kiely — left Spurs suffering their fourth defeat on the trot.

A boggy pitch and a strong cross-wind at White Hart Lane made the flowing football favoured by Hoddle’s team difficult, and the strike pairing of Les Ferdinand and Serhiy Rebrov- - given a rare start in place of Teddy Sheringham — struggled to make an impact.

The win extended Charlton’s unbeaten run against London clubs to 12 matches and marked the first time ever they had beaten Spurs twice in the league in one season.—Reuters
