Legharis abolish Karo-kari
SUKKUR, March 18: Killings under Karo-kari, a century-old tribal custom prevailing in Sindh, has been abolished by Sardar Nadir Akmal Leghari of the Leghari tribe with immediate effect.
He made this announcement on Sunday at the residence of Mubashshar Hussain Leghari in Daharki, while briefing newsmen about his decision.
He announced that from today there was a complete ban on killings under Karo-kari in Leghari tribes and termed the custom un-Islamic and inhuman.
He declared that if any of his tribesmen killed any woman over Karo-kari he would be handed over to the police.
He announced that there would be no “Sardari fine” on the decision taken in Jirgas, and all the money would be handed over to the victim.
He advised the elders of the tribe to convey the message to all Leghari tribesmen to educate their daughters.
He said that it was a difficult task to abolish the age-old custom but, anyway, he had made a beginning.
Sardar Nadir Akmal Leghari appealed to other tribal chiefs of the area to join hands with him in abolishing the custom.
