KARACHI: Water shortage in many areas

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 17: An acute water shortage continues in various parts of the city because of an unannounced change in the water supply schedule by the KWSB.

Complaints of scant supply of water also continued to pour into the newspaper offices from some other areas.

Residents of the affected localities complained that they were earlier being supplied water on alternative days but the KWSB has recently started releasing water after every two days without giving any prior information.

Most of the complaints were received from Federal B. Area, North Nazimabad, Clifton’s Block 2, different societies, Adamjee Nagar, Jamshed Road, old city area, including Kharadar and Lyari.

The water supply position of Orangi, Baldia and Surjani was far worse than that of other areas as these townships are supplied water after every five days and if water is not supplied even once on their turn, the areas remain without water for 11 or 12 days.

The residents said it was beyond their comprehension that when the gap of supplying water to their localities had been increased from one to two days, the supply of water to the KWSB’s six hydrants has not been affected as one could see heavy movement of tankers all around the hydrants as well as on various roads.

The persisting water shortage has become a boon for the private water hydrants and tankers as they are nowadays supplying water at their whim, charging exorbitant rates, they added.

Meanwhile, residents of Orangi, Baldia and Surjani townships have urged City Nazim Naimatullah Khan to direct the KWSB to reduce the gap in water supply to their localities from five days to at least two. The Nazim in the presence of KWSB managing- director had announced on the occasion of restoration of water from the Hub source in August that their localities would get water supply daily.

They said since it was not possible to store water for five days, they have no choice but to drink sub-soil unhygienic water.
