KARACHI: Water shortage in several city areas

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, March 13: Various parts of the city have been facing an acute water shortage owing to short supply of water from the Dhabeji pumping station and Hub dam reservoir.

Well-placed sources told Dawn that the city was getting 25 to 30mgd short supply of water from both the sources.

Asked about the causes of water shortage persisting in different parts of the city, the sources said that on the one hand, the city had been constantly getting between 5 and 7 mgd of water from the Hub dam source and, on the other, a short supply of about 20 mgd was received from Dhabeji pumping station on Tuesday.

About the impact of the short supply of water, the sources said although complaints of water shortage were being received from various parts of the city, the hard-hit areas include sprawling townships of Orangi and Baldia, different sectors of North Karachi, Buffer Zone and parts of Landhi, Korangi, Shah Faisal, Malir, Khokhrapar, Model Colony, Clifton Block 2, tail- end localities of Lyari and their adjoining localities.

Meanwhile, residents of Buffer Zone’s Sector 16-A and North Karachi’s Sector 10 complained that major parts of their localities are deprived of water for the last 10 days.

They deplored that although they had not been getting water for the last 10 days, the concerned officials of the KWSB have not taken measures to restore the supply despite repeated requests made to them on a number of occasions.

The residents of the affected localities demanded of the City Nazim and the KWSB managing director to direct the concerned officials to rectify the problem responsible for suspension of the supply without any further delay as they cannot afford to buy private water tankers.

TRUNK SEWER: Repair of the 36-inch dia trunk sewer which caters to the sewerage needs of major portion of both Landhi and Korangi towns was going on war-footing and the work would be completed in a couple of days, the KWSB chief engineer (Sewerage (Sewerage), Suleman Chandio, told Dawn on Wednesday.

The major trunk sewer was damaged on Monday following an RCC pile of 24-inch dia of KESC tower fell on a 36-inch dia trunk sewer, resulting in sewage overflow on a vast area of Landhi and Korangi.

The KWSB has, however, temporarily diverted the flow of sewage in to a nearby drain after bypassing the KESC’s tower whose pile had penetrated in the Trunk Sewer.

CONTAMINATION: Over 200 houses in Azizabad No 2 have been receiving contaminated water for the last two days.

Residents of the affected locality said a large number of houses in Azizabad No 2 (No 1493 to 1600) were being supplied stinking water and the concerned officials of the KWSB have not yet bothered to rectify the fault.

They demanded of the City Nazim to direct the concerned officials to immediately rectify the fault.
