KARACHI, March 11: A member of a religious party and his associate were shot dead at the party’s office in Shah Faisal Colony on Monday night, police said.
Anwar Ali Tirmizi and Zulfiqar Haider were sitting at the office of the Tehrik-i-Fiqh-i-Jaffaria in Shah Faisal Colony No 4, when two motorcyclists opened fire on them and escaped. Both men suffered multiple bullet wounds. They died on the spot. The bodies were sent to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre.
The city police chief, Asad Jehangir, said the killings appeared to be sectarian-motivated.
Tension gripped the area and youths took to the streets, pelting vehicles with stones and raising slogans against the government.
Police and personnel of law-enforcement agencies have been deployed in the locality to maintain law and order.
In another incident in Shah Faisal Colony, a policeman was shot dead.
Two men, riding on a motorcycle, shot a policeman dead and wounded his colleague in Awami Colony, Shah Faisal Colony.
Police said two policemen were deputed at Nadi No 5 in Awami Colony. They signalled two motorcyclists to stop, but they opened fire on the policemen and escaped. Faizul Islam died. Naimat Khan was wounded, and he was rushed to a hospital.
A man killed his three nephews in New Karachi’s sector 5-A-1 in Khwaja Ajmer Nagri police limits.
The city police chief said Muzaffar Ali, a rickshaw driver, resident of Mithadar, had five sons and one daughter. He had left his house and been staying with his brother Akbar Abbas in New Karachi’s sector 5-A-1. He alleged that his sons had taken all the money he had from him and now they wanted to sell his rickshaw.
The police chief said four brothers came to New Karachi to take their father home, where they had arguments with their uncle Akbar Abbas, who opened fire on them.
Three of the brothers, Ahsan Ali, Mohsin Ali and Abbas Ali, were killed and Irfan Ali was wounded. The dead and injured were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.
Police claimed to have arrested the suspected killer, Akbar Abbas, and started investigation.
PROTEST: The commercial area and marble market in Pak Colony was closed on Monday in protest against lawlessness and rising incidents of theft and robbery in the area.
Residents and shopkeepers said drug-pushers roamed freely in the area and the area police were reluctant to arrest or take any other action against them. Criminals were also being seen moving in the area and the incidents of robbery and theft had become a routine matter.
They accused police of failing to control crime and of patronizing criminals.
Banners and placards were put up at various shops carrying demands, including removal of the SHO Pak Colony police station and the Town Police Officer, SITE, for failing to control crime in their respective areas.
