GUJRANWALA, March 9: Two minor boys were killed and about a dozen others sustained injuries while celebrating Basant in Wazirabad, Ghakkhar, Alipur Chattha and Kamoki while around two dozen people were arrested on the charges of firing shots in the air and using chemical-coated string.
Basant celebrations started on Friday morning and continued till Saturday morning. It was estimated that enthusiasts had spent millions of rupees on kites and strings. They had installed floodlights on the roofs of their houses to enjoy night Basant. They played music all day and displayed fireworks as the set.
Minor boys Imran and Waqas died in Wazirabad after falling from the roofs of their houses.
Meanwhile, religious parties and social welfare organizations demanded a ban on Basant.
UNFAIR MEANS: At least six candidates were caught on Saturday while using unfair means in the secondary school certificate examinations of the Gujranwala Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education.
Official sources said the board chairman raided 25 examination centres for boys and girls in Gujrat and Gujranwala districts.
The chairman expressed dismay over mismanagement of centres in the Government High School, Rahwali, and the Government Higher Secondary School, Ghakkhar, and directed the staff deployed there to improve their situation.
WOMEN’S ROLE: Justice Nasira Javed of the Lahore High Court has urged women to improve their abilities to play their role in society.
Speaking at a seminar on ‘Legal rights of women and awareness’ organized by the District Bar Association here on Saturday on the occasion of International Women Day she said the government had increased women’s seats in national and provincial assemblies.
She urged them to take active part in elections and reach assemblies to fight for women’s rights.
