KARACHI, March 9: Normality retuned to Pakistan Steel on Saturday after the joint action committee of Pakistan Steel officers and workers called off their strike late on Friday night after the intervention by President General Pervez Musharraf.
The President, who was in the city on Friday, had contacted Governor Mohammadmian Soomro who assigned City Naib Nazim Tariq Hassan for talks with the leaders of protesting employees.
Tariq Hasan informed that the Sindh Governor has convened a joint meeting of trade union leaders at the Governor’s House on March 12, which will also be attended by the production secretary Akram Shaikh.
Shamshad Qureshi told PPI that the decision to call off strike was conditional. However, he added that the governor’s message was conveyed to the workers of Pakistan Steel who have resumed their duties and the plant of the mill have been made operative from midnight.
The Sindh home secretary, DIG Karachi Tariq Jameel and other senior government officials were also present when the governor’s message was conveyed to the union leaders.—PPI
