Korean upstages big guns

DUBAI, March 8: Korean Charlie Wi upstaged his more fancied rivals to finish one stroke clear of the field at the halfway mark of the Dubai Desert Classic Friday.

Wi, runner-up on last year’s Asian PGA Tour, shot a five-under-par 67 to move to nine-under-par for the tournament.

South African Ernie Els was in second place at eight-under- par after a round of 68, a stroke clear of England’s John Bickerton and Niclas Fasth of Sweden.

But defending champion and joint overnight leader Thomas Bjorn had a disappointing day, shooting a one-over-par 73 to slip down the leaderboard, while former European number one Colin Montgomerie missed the cut.—Reuters
