Tobacco control won’t hit economy


THIS refers to the letter by Amjad Ali Shah and others (March 4). In this letter a deliberate attempt has been made to create doubts about the implementation of the forthcoming anti-tobacco law, which the medical community has been demanding from the government for the past several years. This is not the first time the tobacco industry has tried to distort the facts and create confusion in the mind of the general public.

The message of WHO is very clear regarding tobacco control. As Dr Brundtland, Director General WHO, said at one of the meetings: “If we do not act decisively today, our children and grandchildren will look back and seriously question how people, claiming to be committed to public health and social justice, allowed the tobacco epidemic to unfold unchecked.”

Mr Amjad has warned about an economic crisis, if tobacco control measures are taken in this country. He has also very proudly stated that tobacco industry pays every year
