KARACHI, March 4: Interior Minister Moinuddin Haider has clarified that under the new setup, police will be responsible to the Nazims to the extent of maintaining law and order.

Replying to a question during his meeting with editors of national and regional dailies here on Monday, the minister said the district police officers would cooperate with the Nazims when there was a question of law and order.

However, he said, the Nazims could not interfere in the functional working of police department and this aspect had been clearly spelled out.

He said if there was rioting or any other law and order problem, judicial magistrates would be there to guide police.

NEW JAILS: The minister of the interior said under the police reforms, new jails were being built and the existing ones were being improved.

He said the entire syllabus for training of jailers at the country’s only Central Training Institute had been rewritten.

He pointed out that data on prisoners was being compiled and Sindh had taken a lead on this count. He said other provinces had also been asked to compile such data of criminals.

The minister also touched upon sectarian and religious terrorism vis-a-vis and the use of loudspeakers.

He said Khateebs had been told to deliver only such sermons which might not promote religious hatred.

He pointed out that the CID which dealt with the issue had been strengthened in all the four provinces and they would be provided with the needed funds and equipment.

He said the CID would now share information with agencies such as the ISI and the IB.

He said a database on the record of sectarian terrorist activities had been prepared which would be provided to all the provinces.—APP
