LAHORE, Feb 25: The woman, who jumped from the third storey of a woman police station and was critically injured a couple of days ago, said on Monday that she wanted to teach a lesson to police for tormenting her.
Nida, 22, a theft suspect in police custody, jumped from the third storey of the police station when she was going to washroom along with a woman constable.
Nida, a resident of Baghbanpura, was arrested by the police some 20 days ago on theft charges from the house of Naseeruddin in Islampura. She was later handed over to the Racecourse police women station.
Talking to Dawn, Nida said that she was going to her aunt’s house in Islampura when some women caught her and labelled her ‘child abductor’. She said the women handed her over to the police and implicated her in a theft case.
She said during interrogation the police allowed her to stay at home at night. She said when the police failed to make her confess the crime she had never committed, SHO Bushra allegedly demanded Rs10,000 for her release. She said on Feb 22, a day before Eid, she paid the money to Bushra but she refused to release her.
She said that she got frustrated and found no other way except for committing suicide. She said she was also upset over the condition of her husband who had to visit the police station every day.
Nida, who was admitted to the Services Hospital with fractured backbone, tibia and ankle, was three-month pregnant. A doctor in the hospital did not comment on her pregnancy.
When asked, she said that she was unaware that she was pregnant.
Nida’s husband Chand, alias Arshad, said he loved his wife very much and he wanted the ordeal to end soon.
Meanwhile, Naseeruddin said that Nida along with two women accomplices entered his house in his absence and asked his wife to recite the Quran for the dead of her family. He said they (women) managed to whisk away 28 tola gold and Rs10,000 in cash. The locals caught her red-handed while the other two escaped.
Inspector Naz Ashraf, the newly appointed house officer of the woman police station, said that Nida had three theft cases registered in 1998 and 2000. She said that the police recovered Rs10,000 from her on Feb 21 but they could not recover gold. However, the FIR was registered on the same day (Feb 21). The police said they allowed Nida to go home every day as she was not formally arrested. The police believed that Nida belonged to a professional gang of thieves who operated with the help of house maids.
The police, however, have registered an attempted suicide case against Nida. —Zulqernain Tahir
