PPP informs UN body of HR abuses

ISLAMABAD Feb 22: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has complained to the UN Human Rights Commission against human rights violation in Pakistan.

In a letter to the UNHRC chief, Mary Robinson, the PPP complained about the military government’s conduct towards political workers.

The central coordinator of the PPP’s human rights desk, Fauzia Wahab, requested the UN high commissioner for human rights to take notice of the inhuman treatment meted out to political activists and to ask the government to refrain from using strong arm tactics against Pakistani citizens.

Ms Wahab apprised Ms Robinson of an incident in Sialkot where the police baton-charged a peaceful demonstration taken out by the PPP workers against the government’s accountability of the PPP and its leadership.

She complained that 15 people were injured in that incident and 50 arrested.

Fauzia Wahab, quoting news reports about the incident, said the police resorted to baton-charge when the protesters chanted slogans against the government.

The PPP leader further contended that the process of accountability had lost its original purpose and credibility. It is essentially turning selective in its outlook and in its working, he said.

The PPP leaders are victimized on account of it as the government carries a strong bias against the PPP, she added.—PPI
