KARACHI: Drizzle disrupts power supply

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, Feb 21: As soon as the city received a little drizzle on Thursday morning, the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation’s transmission and distribution system in areas near the airport broke down, resulting in prolonged power shutdowns.

Residents of Malir, Shah Faisal Colony, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Model Colony and Bhitai Colony told Dawn that power supply to their localities had been cut off almost with the first drop of the drizzle.

A resident of Gulistan-i-Jauhar said that his power supply had been turned off by the KESC even before the drizzle. “In the morning pleasant winds started to blow. I thought that we would have a fine day. At the same moment, we had a power shutdown. When I called the complaint centre of my area, KESC officials said they had turned off the power supply because the first rain or drizzle of the season was particularly bad for the transmission and distribution network.”

A resident of Model Colony said that though the drizzle had been accompanied by the power shutdown, electricity had been restored at least four hours after the drizzle.

Officials of the Pakistan Meteorological Department said that their observatory at the city airport had recorded a drizzle in the morning. They said the drizzle had been too thin to be measured.
