PESHAWAR: Governor asks police not to harbour criminals

PESHAWAR, Feb 21: The NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has advised the police not to compromise on a single criminal and each and every social evil should be dealt with full courage and with iron hand.
Speaking at a police Darbar at the new site of City Police Complex at Wazirbagh here on Thursday where he also laid its foundation stone, the governor said that he received about 60 per cent letters of general public in which the people complaint about police high-handedness.
“The people lament that the murderers and kidnappers are at large in their respective areas with connivance of police officials,” he said. He warned that the practice must be stopped.
He said because of the negative trends prevailed in the past, not only the general public but the police force itself had badly suffered. The police have to perform highly sensitive responsibilities, which were uphill challenging task, he added
Talking about the measures being taken by the government for strengthening of the police system, the governor said: “We have already launched the reformation process and the establishment of Capital City Police is one of such initiative.”
The governor disclosed that the federal government and the World Bank were considering to allow a financial package to meet the expenditure to be incurred on the reformation of NWFP police.
On the demand of lady police official, the governor announced a grant of Rs 500,000 for the repairing and provision of transport to the women police station in Peshawar.
