US senators, Musharraf discuss security

ISLAMABAD, Feb 20: Five US senators met here Wednesday with President Pervez Musharraf to discuss US aid to Pakistan and Washington’s “war on terrorism,” officials said.

The delegation, headed by Daniel Inouye, chairman of the Appropriations Sub-Committee on Defence, “expressed great appreciation for Pakistan’s support to the international coalition in its fight against terrorism,” a president’s spokesman said.

President Musharraf and the senators also discussed bilateral economic issues and “regional security,” the spokesman said.

The visit comes a week after Musharraf visited Washington and received warm praise from President George W. Bush and members of Congress for his support of the US war effort in Afghanistan.

The visiting senators included two Democrats, Inouye of Hawaii and Ben Nelson of Nebraska, and three Republicans: Arkansas’ Tim Hutchinson, Maine’s Olympia Snowe and Alaska’s Ted Stevens. —AFP
