HYDERABAD: Shopkeepers observe strike

HYDERABAD, Feb 20: The shopkeepers of Haider Chowk observed a shutter down strike for several hours and blocked the roundabout here on Wednesday.

They were protesting against the accumulation of dirty water at Haider Chowk.

Talking to newsmen, they said that every second day, dirty water accumulated on this busy roundabout but the civic agencies had taken no notice of the miseries of thousands of the people who lived in the vicinity.

After a couple of hours, police reached the spot and persuaded the angry shopkeepers and the general public to clear the road.

Later, the city taluka Nazim Moin Shaikh and Naib Nazim Qadeer Naghar also rushed to the spot and assured the people that they would talk to Wasa and the HDA authorities to make permanent arrangements to solve the problem.

WASA: A large number of Wasa and HDA employees staged a protest demonstration and half a dozen of them observed a token hunger strike outside the press club here on Wednesday.

They were protesting against the non-payment of their salaries for Jan and advance payment for Eid-ul-Azha.

Talking to newsmen they said that they had given two days to WASA and the HDA administration to pay the salaries to the employees but the managing director of Wasa, Abdul Jabbar Abbasi, and director general, HDA, Shaheer Ahmed Junejo had refused to pay heed to their grievance.

They alleged that the HDA director general had drawn his salary for Feb while the Wasa managing director had taken six months salary in advance.

WATCHMEN: Several government food grain godown employees continued hunger strike outside the press club on the 15th consecutive day here on Wednesday.

Talking to newsmen they said that they were being paid only Rs920 per month instead of the minimum pay scale of Rs1,870 per month and added that they had not received their salaries for Jan and Feb.

They said there would be no Eid for their children if they were not paid advance.
