KARACHI: Paediatrics’ body calls for poverty reduction

KARACHI, Feb 20: The Pakistan Paediatric Association (PPA) has called for an efficient and comprehensive strategy to address a wide range of problems being faced by children in Pakistan.

It has demanded that immediate efforts be made at all levels for debt alleviation and true poverty reduction.

The PPA came forward with several recommendations at the conclusion of the four-day 16th International Biennial Paediatric Conference held in Karachi.

Among the recommendations adopted during the event was also the absolute eradication of polio through the available resources, said a PPA press release issued here on Wednesday.

Stressing the inoculation of children on a regular basis either through the government or private sector, the PPA sought commitment on the part of all its members to participate in and support the immunization of all children under five whether already vaccinated or not.

Urging that malnutrition be combated by good breast-feeding, it emphasised avoidance of feeders and tethers, inclusion of balanced and appropriate diet at correct times and avoidance of junk food.

It maintained that since the development of children required not only nutrition but also education, even of their parents, emphasis must not only be on formal education but also on childrearing practices.

The need for allocation of funds for education and other basic necessities such as water, sanitation, simple but planned housing and good environment was also highlighted.—APP
