GUJRANWALA, Feb 19: Over 55 people were nabbed stealing electricity for domestic and commercial purposes by Gujranwala Electric Power Company (Gepco) in Ladheywala Warraich and Naushera Virkan sub-divisions on Tuesday.
Led by an information, the team raided the remote areas and removed meters and other equipment.
The team issued them a detection bill of Rs400,000 collectively besides lodging FIR against five consumers.
DEATH SENTENCE: The local Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) No 1 on Tuesday awarded death sentence on three counts each to as many people for kidnapping a boy for ransom and later killing him.
The prosecution said convicts Tauseef Ahmad, Muhammad Imran and Dilshad Ahmad kidnapped Saigham Ali’s six-year-old son Ali Muazzam when he was playing in the street. They demanded a ransom of Rs200,000 for his release. Later, the kidnappers killed Muazzam on May 5, 2001, and buried the body in the compound of a house.
Police arrested them and recovered the body on their identification. All the convicts were present in the court when Judge Khawaja Javed Ahmad announced the decision.
Meanwhile, the court acquitted 16 accused involved in manhandling ranger police officials the same day.
According to the prosecution, accused Akram, Abdul Aziz, Shams Din, Riaz, Siddiq, Sher Ali, Rafiq, Aslam, Abdul Karim, Shaukat Ali, Iqbal, Arshad Ali, Muhammad Sharif, Ghulam Husain, Muhammad Arif and Karamat Husain held hostage some rangers in Kotli Meran village and manhandled them over a minor issue a couple of years ago.
The complainants failed to pursue the case while the court acquitted them.
LOOTED: Dacoits on Tuesday made off with cash, gold ornaments and other valuables worth hundreds of thousands of rupees and drove away with a motorbike in six different strikes in and around the district.
Reports revealed five dacoits, in guise of policemen, barged into Muhammad Rafiq’s house in Wahando village, locked the inmates in a room and took away Rs32,000 in cash, eight tolas of jewellery and valuables.
Some 10 dacoits entered constable Shahbaz Ahmad’s house after scaling the boundary walls in Raja Sadhoki village, locked the inmates in a room and fled with Rs200,000 in cash, 18 tolas of gold ornaments and valuables.
