Two acquitted as witnesses change statements

GUJRANWALA, Feb 18: An additional district and sessions judge acquitted two accused involved in a rape-cum-murder case when witnesses changed their statements here on Monday.

According to the prosecution, Muhammad Malik and Amanat Ali of Gujranwala Saddar had killed a woman after being raped her.

THREE DIE ON ROAD: Three persons were killed and 24 others injured in separate road accidents in and around the city on Monday.

Irshad was going by a bicycle when a speeding car crushed him near the Kamoki grain market.

Abdul Ghafoor was crushed to death by a bus on Qila Dedar Singh Road. Later, the bus overturned when its driver lost control over the steering. Some 24 bus passengers sustained injuries. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Qila Dedar Singh in critical condition.

Nawaz of Kotli Sahian, Ghakkhar Town, was knocked down by a wagon on the GT Road. He died while being taken to hospital.

CORPS COMMANDER: Corps Commander Lt-Gen Faiz Jillani visited Rescue-15 squad and the police mobile laboratory during his visit to an exhibition of ‘made in Gujranwala products’ at Ghulshan Iqbal Park on Monday.

He also got checked the documents of his vehicle by the computerized mobile laboratory.

SSP Aslam Tarin, Gujranwala Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Rana Nasir Mahmood and other police officers were also present on the occasion.

POs ARRESTED: Some 14 proclaimed offenders and several dacoits were arrested during a ‘general hold-up’ here on Monday.

Police also arrested about 28 court fugitives and recovered illicit arms and looted goods from their possession.

Seven pistols, four guns, as many rifles, two revolvers and bullets besides a huge quantity of narcotics were recovered from the possession of these criminals.

LOOTED: A filling station manager was deprived of Rs500,000 in cash and motorcycle by highwaymen in Cantonment on Monday.

Khadim Husain was on his way to deposit Rs500,000 in cash with the Habib Bank’s Mindial Warraich branch on the GT Road by a motorcycle. Near the bank, two armed men snatched cash from him at gunpoint and escaped on his motorcycle.

KILLED: A painter was killed while his nephew was injured when they fell from an under-construction mosque in Ghaka Meter, Wazirabad, on Monday.

Khalid and his nephew, Muhammad Ali, were painting the minarets of an under-construction mosque when they slipped and fell down on the ground. Khalid died on the spot, while his nephew sustained head injuries. The injured was rushed to the Lahore General Hospital in critical condition.

SHOT DEAD: A trader was shot dead allegedly by his rival over a money dispute in Chak Madan on Monday.

Sanaullah was on his way home when one Saifullah shot him dead.

It is stated that Sana had borrowed Rs20,000 from the accused, and failed to return the same.

DISMISSED: The Gujranwala range DIG on Monday dismissed from service two police officials for inefficiency.

Those dismissed are inspector Mazhar Fareed and junior clerk Muhammad Riaz of Mandi Bahauddin.
