KARACHI, Feb 16: A policeman and a suspected motorcycle hijacker were shot dead on Saturday in an encounter at the new and used motorcycle market near Regal Chowk in Saddar.

Sub-inspector Abdul Qadir of the Anti-car Lifting Cell raided a spare parts shop, on a tip-off about the presence of a suspected motorcycle hijacker, Shamsuddin, there. As the SI, with a colleague of his, tried to approach the suspect, he opened fire on the policemen, DSP Preedy Ejaz Hashmi told Dawn.

SI Abdul Qadir was hit by two bullets and fell to the ground. His colleague also fired on the fleeing suspect and his accomplice, Nadeem, which resulted in the death of Shamsuddin. The police arrested Nadeem and were investigating the case, he added.

The bodies of the policeman and the suspect were sent to the JPMC for post-mortem.

The police said that Shamsuddin was allegedly involved in a number of motorcycle hijacking cases and he was wanted by several police stations in the city.

SHOT DEAD: Bandits shot a pregnant woman to death in Shah Latif Town on Saturday.

The police said that armed men raided a shop owned by Haji Taj Mohammed and robbed him of cash. As the bandits were collecting cash, his pregnant daughter Zakia put up resistance to the bandits who got jittery, opened fire and fled away with the loot. Zakia was injured and she died in a hospital.

The police, however, arrested one of the bandits, who was identified as Abdul Rahman.

STRANGLED: An elderly woman was found strangled in her Liaquatabad home on Saturday.

Abdul Ghani, a labourer, resident of a shanty town in Liaquatabad, reported to the police that he left his home in the morning. When he returned home, he found his wife Karim Bibi, aged 58, trussed up and dead.

The police sent the body to a hospital for post-mortem where doctors were of the view that death was caused by strangulation.

The police did not find evidence to believe it was an attempt of robbery as cash and valuables remained untouched.
