Ahmad grabs winner

LAHORE, Feb 10: Remounts Orange defeated ACE School/ Nee Punhal 8—7 1/2, to win the Samsung Venture Cup polo trophy Sunday with Ahmad Khan scoring the decisive goal.

In the subsidiary final, despite a double hat trick by Diego Araya, Master Paints lost to KFC Remounts 8—6 1/2.

School/ Punhal with a one-and-a-half goal handicap had Shah Shamyl Alam, opening the scoring with a 60 yards penalty-hit followed by teammate Samiullah who netted in two more goals in the first chukker.

Sufi Muhammad Amir scored a goal with Ahmad slamming in two goals for Orange to end the chukker with a lead of 4 1/2-3 for Ace school/Nee Punhal.

The second chukker started with Mazzini converting a 30 yards penalty-hit for Orange, but Shamyl also converted a 30 yards penalty-hit to maintain a 5 1/2-4 lead for School/Punhal.

The third chukker ended with a sole goal by Mir Shoaib taking the lead to 6 1/2-4 for School/ Punhal

The well contested fourth chukker saw Mazzini scoring back-to-back goals and Ahmad scoring on a solo effort for Orange. Samiullah crowned a combined move to score his third and School/Nee Punhal final goal but with barely 90 seconds remaining, Ahmad slammed the winning goal.

Master Paints had an advantage of half-a-goal on handicap but despite Diego Araya’s double hat trick could not stop Remounts from scoring eight goals through the efforts of Captain Shahryar and Haseeb Mehta who scored three goals each, with Toto Collardin and Arsalan Najib completing the tally with a goal apiece.

Meanwhile two polo cups, the February and the Basant are due to start from Monday and Tuesday with the following teams participating.

Six goal handicap teams participating in the Basant Cup starting Tuesday have been divided in two pools:

Pool “A”: KFC Remounts (Whites), Master Paints, XXX.

Pool “B”: Samsung Mobiles, Olympian/Nee Punhal, Remounts.

Two matches will be played on opening day Tuesday with Master Paints meeting XXX at 2:15 pm and Olympian/Nee Punhal playing Samsung Mobiles at at 3:15 pm.

The final of the competition will be played Saturday. The February Cup will be organised side-by-side with the Basant Cup.

The inaugural match will be held Monday between Nee Punhal and Rangers at 2:15 pm. Borjan will meet First Law Company the same day at 3:15 pm.

The six participating teams have been divided into the following two groups:

Group “A”: Nee Punhal, Rangers, Guard Filter (Reds).

Group “B”: First Law Company, Black Berets/PTCL, Borjan.
