Red Wings Humbled at home

Published February 10, 2002

DETROIT, Feb 9: The Columbus Blue Jackets defied all the experts and pulled off one of the biggest surprises of the National Hockey League season on Friday night.

David Vyborny’s goal 19 seconds into the third period turned out to be the winner as the Blue Jackets shocked the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 at Joe Louis Arena, where the Red Wings rarely lose a game.

The Wings entered the contest unbeaten at home in 13 games, while the Blue Jackets were winless in their last 10 games (0-9-1) on the road.

On top of that fact, Detroit was on a two-game winning streak while Columbus had lost five in a row.

But stellar goaltending from Marc Denis, who made 33 saves, gave Columbus its first ever win at Detroit.

Deron Quint and Ray Whitney scored the other goals for the Blue Jackets, while U.S. Olympians Brett Hull and Chris Chelios scored for the Red Wings, who out-shot the visitors 35-25.
