ISLAMABAD, Feb 8: The National Kashmir Committee (NKC) has called upon UN Secretary General Kofi Annan to exercise the powers invested in him by Articles 99, Chapter VX of the UN Charter and bring to an end the dangerous military situation created in nuclear-armed South Asia because of the unresolved dispute of Indian-held Jammu and Kashmir.

The NKC, which met here on second consecutive day Friday, continued to get input from the Kashmiri leaders who are involved in the freedom struggle.

Jamaat-i-Islami’s AJK chief, Abdul Rashid Turabi, and PML AJK chief Maj-Gen (retd) Mohammad Hayat Khan attended the meeting while three others invited by the committee — former AJK premier and PPP leader Barrister Sultan Mehmud Chaudhry, Liberation League president Justice (retd) Majeed Malik and Sardar Khalid Ibrahim Khan — remained absent.

JI’s Turabi, at the outset, objected to the constitution of NKC by what he termed keeping the real parties to the issue in the dark and discouraging the interest of Kashmiri leaders, some of whom were conspicuous by their absence in Friday’s meeting.

He asked the government of Pakistan to take follow-up steps after sending a few delegations abroad to effectively respond to the Indian war threats and shun the actions which were de-motivating the elements involved in freedom struggle across the border.

PML’s Hayat Khan said the government should carry on with its stance of Kashmir dispute’s resolution in accordance with the UN resolutions and keep urging the international community to lay stress on the implementation of these resolutions.

Both emphasized that the role of OIC should be sought. India, by disallowing its mission to visit held Kashmir, had exposed itself as a state which was unleashing a reign of terror on Kashmiri people.
