FAISALABAD, Feb 7: The PPP, the PML and the Jamaat-i-Islami announced on Thursday to support the lawyers agitating against the promulgation of the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, 2002.
In separate statements, PPP’s divisional coordinator Raja Riaz Ahmad, PML leader Rana Muhammad Afzal Khan, Jamaat-i-Islami’s city Amir Mahboob-uz-Zaman Butt assured full cooperation to the lawyers.
They said the military rulers were ruining all institutions just to prolong their rule which could be dangerous for the federation.
The step to appoint military officers in anti-terrorism courts is a clear violation of a Supreme Court decision.
Meanwhile, the District Bar Association and other organizations of lawyers decided to observe a complete strike on Friday (today), on the call of the Punjab Bar Council and the Lahore High Court Bar Association.
Faisalabad District Bar Association President Muh-ammad Rafiq Batalvi has urged the lawyers not to attend any court on Friday.
Presided over by PBC executive member Malik Amjad Husain on Thursday, a meeting of the lawyers termed the government step to appoint military officers in the ATCs as ‘judicial terrorism’.
The PML Lawyers Forum and the PPP Lawyers Forum also supported the strike call and urged President Musharraf not to take illegal steps.
