LONDON, Feb 6: League Cup finalists Tottenham Hotspur romped into the FA Cup fifth round Tuesday with a 4-0 thrashing of Premier League rivals Bolton Wanderers at White Hart Lane.

Goals from the outstanding Darren Anderton, Steffen Iversen, Matthew Etherington and an Anthony Barness own goal secured an easy win for Glenn Hoddle’s side, who hammered Bolton 6-0 in the League Cup quarterfinals earlier this season.

Spurs, eight times FA Cup winners, entertain second division Tranmere Rovers in the fifth round.

First division Gillingham earned a plum fifth-round trip to Premier League giants Arsenal by beating Bristol Rovers of division three 1-0 in Tuesday’s other fourth round tie.

At White Hart Lane, Hoddle left out captain Teddy Sheringham as he is one booking away from missing the League Cup final on Feb 24, but Spurs still dominated.

Uruguayan Gustavo Poyet saw an early shot pawed away by Bolton’s Finnish goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen, who did even better to keep out an Iversen header soon after.

Ukraine striker Serhiy Rebrov then fired wastefully over and Bolton’s keeper again denied Iversen after 20 minutes but the visitors could still feel unlucky when they fell behind after 22 minutes.

Anderton, making his 300th Spurs appearance, burst into the area and although luckless Bolton defender Barness appeared to play the ball, the referee awarded a penalty and Anderton drove home the spot kick.

Iversen made it 2-0 after 35 minutes from close range after more good work by Anderton down the flank against a limp Bolton defence.

Bolton had an effort ruled out for offside before halftime but Poyet also hit the post after a flowing Spurs move.

Etherington cracked in Tottenham’s third, his first for the club, after Anderton’s fierce 56th-minute shot was well saved by the besieged Jaaskelainen.

Barness, who also scored an own goal in the 6-0 League Cup defeat, then put through his own net again after 73 minutes to make it 4-0, meaning Bolton have conceded 13 goals in three games against Spurs this season.

Bristol Rovers, who produced a stunning win at Premier League Derby County in round three, lost their captain Lewis Hogg stretchered off injured early on at Gillingham.

The third division side conceded the decisive goal after 32 minutes in equally unfortunate circumstances.
