ISLAMABAD, Feb 2: The visiting Executive Director of World Food Programme Ms Catherine Bertini called on President Gen Pervez Musharraf here Saturday.

The president appreciated the WFP efforts to provide food to Afghans inside Afghanistan and the externally displaced persons in Pakistan.

He lauded their efforts at ensuring food supply to Afghanistan even during the days of heavy bombing. He said the WFP carried out a truly remarkable operation many other agencies were reluctant to take up for security hazards.

The Executive Director WFP was all praise for Pakistan’s role in the current scenario, hosting EDPs and the Afghan refugees despite resource constraints.

She praised the president for extending cooperation to the WFP for ensuring uninterrupted food supply to Afghanistan. She informed the president that the WFP was providing food to around 200,000 Afghan EDPs in Pakistan.

She reaffirmed WFP’s commitment to providing food security cover to the Afghan people inside Afghanistan and EDPs in Pakistan.

The WFP explained food for work projects of her organization and details of the country programme for Pakistan to assist and rehabilitate drought affectees of Balochistan and Sindh. —NNI
