Power project: pact signed with Chinese firm

GILGIT, Feb 1: A formal pact was signed in Beijing on Friday between a Chinese electric firm and Pakistan government to launch 18 megawatt hydro-electric project in Nalter valley, some 25km from here, Dawn learnt here on Friday.

The work on the above project was due to start in June 2001 but was delayed due to unavoidable circumstances, said reliable sources.

They said following the construction of the project, the power demands of the Northern Areas would be fully met.

The cost of the Nalter Hydro-electric project is estimated at Rs1 billion.
