PESHAWAR, Feb 1: A five-day training workshop on management of child health in humanitarian emergencies concluded here on Thursday. The workshop was jointly organized by Pakistan Paediatric Association, and International Paediatric Association in collaboration with the American Academy of Paediatrics, Johnson and Johnson Paediatric Institute, and Unicef.
As many as 60 paediatricians and health managers from Afghanistan and Pakistan participated in the workshop. The course was designed to equip the participants with the necessary knowledge and skill to cope with humanitarian emergencies in a better way. Speaking at the final day of the course, Sahibzada Mohammad Anees, additional commissioner Afghan refugees, said that the government had decided to open new camps in the tribal areas as the urban areas could no longer afford the burden of more refugees.
The government was doing whatever it could to rehabilitate the Afghan refugees, he said, adding that at present, there are more than 2.5 million refugees in the country, of which around 1.9 million resided in the NWFP.
