LAHORE, Jan 31: US Ambassador to Pakistan Wendy Chamberlin met the Punjab chief secretary, the home secretary and the IGP to reportedly discuss important issues regarding the law and order including action against jihadi outfits and the abduction of American journalist Daniel Pearl.
No further details could be known but sources said the recovery of the abducted journalist and the jihadi outfits were the main topics of the meetings.
The ambassador who was accompanied by American Principal Officer Sheldon Rappoport first separately met the chief secretary and the home secretary and later had a detailed meeting with the IGP at the Civil Secretariat. Other senior police officers were also present during the meeting with the IGP.
Official sources said the American envoy held one-to-one meetings with the chief secretary and the home secretary.
Tight security arrangements were made at the Civil Secretariat for the envoy who was escorted by her own security and personal staff.
Meanwhile, she also called on Law Minister Dr Khalid Ranjha at the Civil Secretariat and said America was ready for cooperation in demolishing gangs involved in the abduction of children and women for white slavery throughout the world. Mr Rappoport was also present on the occasion.
Ms Chamberlin said for eliminating the international smuggling of women and children the US Senate had recommended the stoppage of economic aid to countries which did not come up to the international standards of implementing laws against such smuggling.
She said America was ready to cooperate with Pakistan in the implementation of workable plans for the eradication of women and child smuggling. American congress would be contacted to give training to police in modern techniques of investigation and to provide them with sophisticated gadgets to locate the criminals.
Ms Chamberlin said media was being used to create awareness about the smuggling of women and children in eastern European countries.
Dr Ranjha said the Bar associations, market committees and members of local governments could play a major role in creating awareness about the smuggling of women and children.
He said child labour had completely been eradicated in Sialkot and over 50,000 poor prisoners released. He said a $350 million access to justice programme had been started with the assistance of the Asian Development Bank.
