Corruption in cops recruitment denied

By Our Correspondent

LAKKI MARWAT, Jan 31: The Lakki Marwat district and Bannu Range police officials have rejected the allegations levelled against them by various union councils’ Nazims that they took bribes in the recent recruitment of police constables.

Bannu Range Deputy Inspector-General Mian Baz Afridi and Lakki Marwat SP Abdullah Khan, at a press briefing, described as baseless the allegations that huge amounts of money had been paid to high-ranking police officials to recruit certain youths as police constables.

Some days back, the Lakki Marwat police took a test and conducted interviews to fill some vacant posts of police constable in the district.

However, the Nazims of different union councils, during a district council session, lashed out at the DIG for allegedly interfering in the recruitment and accused the police officials of taking bribes to recruit certain candidates.

The DIG and the SP announced that one million rupees would be given to the Nazims if they proved their allegations. If the Nazims failed to prove the allegations, they should resign, the police officials said.

The SP told newsmen that the DIG was the chairman of the recruitment committee and his presence was essential to supervise the test and the interviews.

SUSPENDED: Meanwhile, the DIG of the Bannu Region suspended two SHOs for misusing their powers.

The SHOs were charged with abetting two rival groups, who resorted to aerial firing a week ago over a railway quarter dispute in Serai Naurang, 35km away from here.

Higher police authorities launched an operation during which more than 40 people from both the groups were arrested and a huge quantity of arms and ammunition was seized from their possession. The DIG constituted an inquiry commission, which said in its report that the SHOs had misused their powers.
