LARKANA, Jan 30: In order to strengthen the people-police participation Shahdadkot and Mirokhan talukas have decided to introduce a Chowkidari system where a police officer would look after 20 villages.
It was decided in Mirokhan on Tuesday after a meeting of Zila Nazim Khursheed Junejo and District Police Officer Ghulam Nabi Memon which was also attended by the Nazims and others.
The system would start working within a week where both the villagers and the police would not only establish the system but also patronize it on long-term basis.
THe people who have weapon licenses would register themselves with the police station concerned, and an assistant sub-inspector of the police would join them as a coordinator.
If a licensee himself wishes to be a night watchman he can be so but if he does not then he should handover his gun to another volunteer to become the part of this programme.
Speaking at the meeting, the Nazim and the DPO have said a dozen permanent check posts would be set up in the bordering areas of Sindh-Balochistan after establishing 100 check posts alongside the River Indus for checking the movement of dacoits from the kutcha area.
They said an Awami fund campaign was being launched in the district. The fund would be utilized to award those people and police officials who would help eliminate banditry.
The DPO said 100 harbourers of criminals had been caught and announced on next Sunday a meeting of all the Nazims, Naib Nazims, DSPs, SHOs would be held in Larkana to further streamline the system.
