KARACHI, Jan 30: Visiting chief executive of the IFC and managing director of the World Bank Group, Peter Woicke, accompanied by other officials of the Bank, called on Sindh governor Mohammedmian Soomro at the governor’s house.
During the meeting the governor apprised the MD World Bank of the province’s economic and social sectors and identified the possible targets of investment and development schemes.
Replying to various queries, the governor said that there was a greater need for implementation of a coordinated programme of restoration of ruined infrastructure and with better resources.
He said merit and transparency were being promoted for the attainment of the desired results, while financial discipline had been established, enabling the Sindh government to pay back its 12-year-old overdraft.
Mr Soomro told the WB officials that special stress wars being laid on resource generation. He said the government intended to float municipal bonds but before that efforts were being made to further improve the financial arrangements so that people could invest with confidence.
He said that cooperation of community and participation of private sector had been ensured at all levels.
He said the government was working in the health and education sectors and for basic facilities for the betterment of the common man in the cities and towns of the province in cooperation with prominent industrialists and concerned citizens.
He informed that a comprehensive master plan was being formulated for Karachi to achieve far-reaching results.
