KARACHI: CJ wants free legal aid for the poor

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, Jan 22: The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Bashir Jehangiri, on Monday called for addressing the problems being faced by destitute litigants who could not afford a lawyer to defend themselves.

Speaking at a reception organized by the Sindh High Court Bar Association in the Bar Room of the High Court, he asked the SHCBA to constitute a result- oriented free legal aid society to assist such litigants.

Justice Jehangiri said that relationship between the bench and the bar was indispensable, adding that he had tried to maintain that. He said a good lawyer made a good judge, and vice versa.

“If you want to strengthen the institution of administration of justice, it was necessary to work hard,” he said.

Earlier the president of the SHCBA, Abul Inam, welcomed the Chief Justice.

Some of the judges of the Supreme Court, the Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court, Saiyed Saeed Ashhad, and his brother judges, and Justice Fazal Ilahi of the Federal Shariat Court and his brother judges, the Attorney-General of Pakistan and the Advocate-General of Sindh were also present besides a large number of lawyers.
