Millat Party backs electoral reforms

RAWALPINDI, Jan 21: The Millat Party supports the electoral reforms of the government, which were also a part of its manifesto, the party’s secretary-general, Mohammad Ali Durrani, said here on Monday.

Speaking at a “Meet the Press” programme, Mr Durrani hailed the decision of increasing the number of national assembly seats, and stressed that Senate seats should also be enhanced.

In case the Senate seats are not increased, the province having more seats in the National Assembly will have dominancy over the other provinces and the balance of power among them would be disturbed, he said.

He said the finance bill should be approved after its passage through the Senate. He also welcomed the joint electorate system, saying it would give equal status to the minorities.

He claimed that Millat Party’s manifesto called for joint electorate system.

Hailing graduation as the eligibility criteria for contesting elections, he said it would bring new faces, especially from the middle class, to the fore and abolish the monopoly of the feudals.— Reporter
