KARACHI: NGOs urged to help govt contain population growth
KARACHI, Jan 21: The non-governmental organizations have been urged to help the government departments in their efforts to contain and check the rapid growth of population.
Speaking at an ‘Open House’ of the Marie Stopes Society (MSS) held at its Defence Housing Authority premises, Federal Secretary for Population Welfare Tariq Janjua said that population in Pakistan was growing at a fast rate and there was an addition of three million in the country’s population every year.
He stated that the government alone could not cope with the population growth issue and that the NGOs and other organizations should also extend a helping hand in this respect.
Mr Janjua also praised the performance of the MSS and its quality of training, which was termed focused as well as the cost effective.
He also saw a documentary in which the past 10 years’ performance of the MSS as well as the facilities made available by it were enumerated.
The executive director of the MSS, Mohsina Bilgrami, said her organization had started its work with one centre some 10 years ago. Now 30 centres are functioning in the country’s 20 cities.
Ms Bilgrami said these centres were fully equipped and manned by trained personnel.
Meanwhile, during the ‘Open House’, the performance of the MSS from 1991 to 2001 was discussed.
Sajid Jafri, external relations director of the MSS, said his organization would be ready to outsource its new training centre to the NGOs for use for the health and population welfare activities.
He said the MSS had also developed packages pertaining to health and population welfare as well as teaching and practical training pertaining to reproductive health.
