KARACHI: Special plan for better traffic management


KARACHI, Jan 20: The DIG Traffic, Saud Ahmed Mirza, has said some important and busy roads of the city such as Sharea Faisal, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Tin Hatti-Karimabad road, M. A. Jinnah Road, Lasbella to Board Office Road and Site to Mauripur road are being made as model roads.

He said complaint centres had been established in all districts where prompt action was taken on receipt of complaint.

He was speaking at a seminar on “Traffic and solution of its problems,” organized by the Firdaus Ittehad and Firdaus Colony Union here on Sunday.

The DIG traffic said steps had been initiated on the special directive of the IG Sindh, Syed Kamal Shah, for improvement in traffic in Karachi. In this regard a comprehensive plan had been prepared that would be implemented with the cooperation of the city Nazim, the DCO and transporters.

Under the plan, a control room was being established in each district and the warden system being re-introduced with the cooperation of the people, Mr Mirza said.

As regards fitness of vehicles, the DIG said special arrangements were being made. Old buses, after repairs and refurbishment, would be pressed into service.

The DIG traffic informed the seminar that a special campaign had already been launched against violations of traffic rules and a system of mobile checking been initiated in every district.

He said President General Pervez Musharraf, during his visit to Karachi, had announced that the amount recovered from traffic fines would be used for the welfare of traffic police.

He said as per directive of the President, the IG Sindh had taken immediate steps for improvement in traffic.
