KARACHI, Jan 18: A man committed suicide by setting himself on fire in public in the limits of Sharea Faisal police on Friday.
The police said that Victor, aged 40, who had heavily sprinkled petrol on his clothes, set himself on fire on a street in Cantt Bazar before a crowd of onlookers. He suffered severe burns. He was taken to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
The police said that Victor had been jobless for quite some time. His wife worked as a domestic servant, the police added.
ROAD ACCIDENTS: Two women died in road accidents in the city on late Thursday night and Friday.
The police said that a 27-year-old unmarried girl was run over by a truck on Native Jetty Bridge on late Thursday night. The police said that Fareeda was travelling on a motorcycle with her brother when a truck hit them and escaped. The truck was travelling at high speed.
The injured were rushed to Civil Hospital where doctors pronounced the girl dead on arrival.
A woman died in a road accident near Drigh Road railway station on Sharea Faisal on Friday. The police said that Chanda, aged 50, was knocked down by a passenger coach near the Drigh Road traffic signal while walking across the main road.
She was rushed to Jinnah Post-graduate Medical Centre (JPMC) where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
The coach driver sped away after the accident.
CARJACKING: Twenty-one vehicles — seven cars and 14 motorcycles — were either hijacked or stolen in the city on Friday, the police said.
Four cars were hijacked and three others were stolen, in districts East, South, and Central.
Five motorcycles five were hijacked. Nine others were stolen.
ROBBERIES: Three robberies were committed in the city on Friday, the police said.
Eight armed men barged into the house of Arif in Block 2 of Gulshan-i-Iqbal, held the family as hostage at gunpoint, and got away with gold jewellery worth Rs one million, 5,000 US dollars, prize bonds and 100,000 rupees and other valuables.
Bandits raided the house of Mehmood in Gulshan-i-Iqbal, locked the family members into a room and looted cash, gold jewellery and other valuables.
Three armed men committed a robbery in a house in North Nazimabad.
KILLED: Unidentified men throttled a former police official to death in the city on Friday.
His body was found on Madina Road in Jacob Lines in the afternoon, the police said. A duty officer at Brigade police station said that Maqsood Ali Lodhi, aged 60, was found throttled at a deserted place on Madina Road. Later on, after post-mortem the body was handed over to relatives.
An unidentified assailant killed a labourer in Korangi Industrial Area.
The police said that Wali Ahmed, aged 40, was struck on the head with a shovel, used for digging earth. He was working in Sector 31-B in Korangi Industrial Area when an unidentified man struck him with a shovel on the head.
POISONED: Unidentified persons/person allegedly poisoned a young man to death in Federal B-Area on Friday.
