Bawany bounces back to win

KARACHI, Jan 17 : Ahmed Bawany fought his way out trouble by beating Shoaib A. Qadir 5-4, to book a berth in the quarterfinal in the Red & White Sindh Cup played Thursday evening at the Indus Snooker Club in Bahadurabad.

Trailing 0-4 at one stage of the game, the former, Pakistan international, finally got his act together and swept through the last five frames to emerge a happy winner.

But the shock of the evening came when last year’s finalist and top seed Irfan R. Khan was sent packing 5-4 by Masood Ahmed, after taking a commanding 4-1 lead and only a frame away from victory.

Level at 4-4, Irfan led by 24 points in the final frame, but a brilliant clearance of 35 sealed his doom.

Amongst the 288 cueists that participated in this tournament, the last 16, who played Thursday qualified for the pre-nationals which gets under way at the Indus Snooker Club from Jan 23.

Following is the pre-quarterfinal results: Mohammad Akhlas beat Sunil Samuel Shahani 5-3: 76/42, 81/24, 32/64, 48/67, 53/61, 70/15, 61/46, 77/31. Farhan Idrees beat Faisal Essa 5-0: 59/12, 54/20, 64/26, 50/17, 61/8. Mohammad Aslam beat Shahid N. Minhas 5-3: 69/25, 67/28, 45/56, 86/65, 25/63, 52/37, 8/73, 73/68. Ahmed Bawany beat Shoaib A. Qadir 5-3: 56/89, 34/66, 26/62, 29/63, 66/26, 71/12, 55/13, 70/36. Danish Haroon beat Imran Yousuf 5-3: 13/66, 63/31, 47/60, 39/65, 71/46, 85/6, 60/40, 69/34. Mohammad Amin (Larkana) beat Asim Ghani 5-1: 78/24, 71/42, 38/68, 58/21, 71/65, 99/22. Ahmer Sheikh beat Anil Bherwani 5-2: 39/79, 80/29, 47/51, 66/44, 77/33, 89/7, 74/29. Masood Ahmed beat Irfan R. Khan 5-4: 64/52, 62/73, 15/74, 60/69, 62/67, 72/28, 60/39, 67/41, 55/47.
