Khans steal show in day of upsets
KARACHI, Jan 12: The Khan brothers, jockey S. Khan and trainer S. N. Khan, stole the limelight in a day of upsets, when they shared a splendid double at the Winter Gymkhana races held at the Karachi Racecourse Saturday.
After piloting their 11-year-old bay Sher Khan to the third spot in the opening race, which was won by the speedy Atish Fishan with riding boy Zubair Ahmed in the saddle, the brothers came to the fore in the last two events with smashing victories.
In the fifth race, S. Khan partnering Rahat Sultan’s 10-year-old bay Sachin, ended the pretensions of the crowd fancy Ever Shine, sprinting in from behind with a tremendous burst to beat nearest rival Hamza Saheb by four lengths. Half a length behind came Ever Shine, with Blue’s Night completing the frame.
This was the second time in three outings that Sachin toppled the applecart. The first came with jockey M. Nasir in the saddle. The popular S. Khan was a happy man, scoring a winner after nearly a year in the doldrums.
Not to be undone, the Khan brothers also bagged the last event on the card.
Riding the bay four-year-old filly Baby Face, S. Khan never gave his large band of supporters any anxiety, winning the five furlong sprint by two lengths from Queen Of Hearts. The raging favourite Shab-e-Noor ridden by Yousuf was third, while Son Of None, with M. Mazhar replacing Riaz Mohammad in the saddle was fourth.
Shab-e-Noor owned by a Steward of the KRC, was without a shadow of doubt pulled hook, line and sinker by jockey M. Yousuf. The bay filly loves to run in front but on Saturday when the race began she was trailing in ninth position with even a slow starter like Welcome Shahtab lying sixth.
Shab-e-Noor did cover tremendous ground to lie third behind Baby Face and Queen Of Hearts, while turning for home, but this was only a sham to pull the wool over the racing fans eyes.
M. Yousuf was content to stay in the third spot, never allowing Shab-e-Noor to make further improvement.
This race was bagged by another outsider Baa Wafa with riding boy Zahoor Ahmed astride. My Time was second, ahead of Bach Fly and Tanveer-e-Sehar.
Riding boy A. Rauf registered a welcome victory astride another outsider Lady Killer, just managing to hold off the belated challenge of Richy Rich. The favourite Even Top was a miserable third with Little Sunny completing the frame.
Owner-trainer Iftikhar Ali had his moments of glory, when his chestnut colt Aziz Love beat nearest rival Just In Fun by a street. Wonderful Boy slipped in to take the third spot from Party Time. Striker, fancied by many to win this race, burst a blood vessel and finished amongst the also ran.
The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Jan 19.
